How To Draw a Butterfly Tutorial

With so many watercolor butterfly tutorials, I thought it was hiiigh time that we had a drawing tutorial for these delicate, fluttering insects! So here we are: How to draw a realistic butterfly!
I originally created this drawing on an instagram live video, so at some points you’ll notice that I answer questions or respond as though there are people there with me… because at the time of the recording, there kind of was people there with me! But the content was too good to keep on Instagram, so I decided to rework the video a little bit and put it up on YouTube for all of you!

Drawing realistically can be intimidating, but if you’ve been around here for very long at all, you know that I’m a firm believer that ANYONE CAN LEARN TO DRAW. The trick is teaching your eye to lead your hand, rather than trying to get your hand to follow your head (which is usually confused and doesn’t exactly know what it’s doing anyway!). Beyond that, it’s simply learning the tricks of communicating with your viewer, helping your hand to develop and staying out of your own head.

To help share this a little further, I am excited to have a YouTube video up where I let you peak over my shoulder while I freehand draw this darling butterfly!
