How to Paint a Watercolor Humpback Whale - Beginner Watercolor

There’s something about being an artist and being pregnant that makes you want to paint all of the sweet little baby things! If I’m honest, I thought the “bug” to create things for the nursery would hit me harder, but with both of my pregnancies, I only painted one thing for the boys. That’s an average of less than one painting per kid, haha! Although with the twins I suddenly started to add multiple animals/insects into all of my artwork, which I think was due to the fact that I was suddenly seeing “double” in every way! haha

When I finally DID create something “just for the twins”, it was also largely a therapeutic piece for me. I didn’t plan on sharing the process or even sharing the final piece. But it was SO EASY and so SATISFYING to create, that I knew you would love it! So here’s the tutorial—in all of the glory that bad, late night lighting and a groggy, tired mama can give! I hope you love it :)

So without further to do: in this watercolor painting tutorial, I'm going to walk you through the painting process of this loose watercolor humpback whale! I love the grace and elegance of the blue humpback whale, and I wanted a painting that would capture that dance but also have a little bit of personality—while being a soothing and relaxing painting experience. If you have ever wondered if there was an easy way to paint a whale, this is the watercolor tutorial for you!
